From Canon City Co east to Pueblo Co the tracks are still owned by and dispatcehd by UP.If ya do a search here on TO and look for anything Tennesse Pass/TP Pass you will see much info on the line and whats been going on since 1997. From Parkdale Co into Canon City Co the tracks are owned by both Rock & Rail and the Canon City and Royal Gorge Tourist Line. Nothing can operate basically just a few miles west of where the 2nd shot was taken at. From what's known as the West Siding Switch Parkdale Co (West of Canon City, Co) up and over Tennessee Pas and into and thru Minturn Colo to Gypsum Co the tracks are all out of service and are in pretty bad shape. This is all part of the ex DRGW Tennessee Pass Line which UP placed out of Service around August 1997. But the section you see here is active on a daily basis. > much better that the ones in use near my home. > are these tracks out of use since 1997? They looks > Great pictures and nice adventure you did. Hopefully they will make another run out to pick up cars and use the freshly painted 401 to do so. He went his way up into the hills and I went back to where I parked the truck at. Funny thing is, I usually carry when I am out in the woods or somewhere such as this and I completely forgot til after I had already walked back past the 3 tunnels up here. Don't think it saw me and wasn't really to worried as it was on the opposite side of the river and it wasn't real shallow thru here. Tried to get a shot but didn't haul the Zoom with me and the regular size lens, well I couldn't pick him/her out of all the other brown objects on that side of river. I spotted some movement before the train arrived and after looking, spotted him or her off on the far left on the little flat area. The most interesting thing this morning in getting this shot, A Mountain Lion was on the far bank of the river. 5 miles give or take west of the siding at Canon City. Here is RRRR 201 leading the train about 1. Has to be an early morning shot and with only the Regular RRRR Rock train, a few BNSF Ballast Trains here and there and the RGX Tourist trains, it can be a challenge to get it all to come together and get a decent shot. It has taken til now to get back up here and get the shot. Thought at the time it would make a good shot. But a few years ago, msns2557 and myself made the walk along here and came across this vista. About a mile or so walk up what is known as Tunnel Drive, which runs above the tracks and the Arkansas River at the east end of the Royal Gorge. Had to do some leg work to get up to get this shot. They eventually went to East Parkdale and made a reverse move back to the 15 Empty Cement Cars that they had left on the siding, laced them up, made an air test and then headed east thru the Royal Gorge and eventually Pueblo with the 62 cars they had behind the power. RRRR GP40-2 201 and RRRR GP40-3 501 have the cut moving along the main. Tho they have a few more cars stored along the tracks here (WSS Parkdale) and Spikebuck to the west, I have not seen anything move this far west since 1997. After hooking to the 47 cars they proceeded east down the main just west of the switch at the West End of Parkdale. Seems as if HERZOG had purchased a cut of 47 Coal Cars for their use and that was what the entire morning was about for this crew. After getting on the Main they headed west towards the pick up they were making. They took the 15 cars they hung onto down the siding to the east end of Parkdale and dropped them there. This was the first steps in the move today. ![]() They took 15 east from here and left about 15 on the west end of the siding here at West Parkdale. The crew is preparing to make a cut on a string of Cement Cars. The bridge on the left is one that was at the entrance to the quarry for many, many years before being replaced a year or so ago. Just west of the entrance to the Martin Marietta Quarry where the "regular Rock Train" begins it's journey. Here is just a sampling of the shots I managed on this rather cold and windy day out this way. West of Parkdale is where I myself have not seen a train move since when UP made there last move, which would have been around August 1997 or so. After the regular Rock train went east from the quarry the RRRR 201 & 501 proceeded to go about their work. Other things came up and the 401 was not used, but the train still operated. Power was to be the recently rebuilt and repainted RRRR 401. This past Friday I got word from the powers that be at Rock & Rail that they were going to move some cars out of storage along the UP Tennessee Pass Main west of Parkdale Co., this morning. ![]()
